Any person involved with skiing or snowboarding must understand and obey the right-of-way laws of the mountain. As with drivers on the road, it is important for them to follow these rules in order to prevent unnecessary collisions and injuries.

Riders should always yield the right of way to individuals farther down the mountain. It is impossible and unsafe to expect skiers and snowboarders to be aware of and accountable for the movements of people behind them. Instead, it is the duty of all riders to maintain a safe, controllable speed while traveling down the mountain and to refrain from traveling too close to those farther in front of them.

The only time right of way is extended to riders higher up the mountain is when an individual attempts to enter a run from a side trail. In this situation, the skier coming onto the run must monitor riders both up and down the mountain in order to determine a safe time to enter.
